Motorbikes Now Subject to Emissions Testing Requirements
Rwanda is once again demonstrating its commitment to environmental leadership in Africa. Starting 25 August 2025, the country has expanded its vehicle emissions testing program to include motorbikes for the first time, a groundbreaking move that positions Rwanda at the forefront of sustainable transportation policy across the continent.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and the Ministry of Environment, represents a significant milestone. While many countries focus primarily on four-wheeled vehicles, Rwanda recognizes that comprehensive air-quality improvement requires addressing all emission sources, including the thousands of motorbikes that traverse our streets daily.
